His landmark debut Old No. 1 (1975), as well as Texas Cookin’ (1976), Guy Clark (1978) and South Coast of Texas (1981), backed the point. All four are represented on Live from Austin, TX. Rarely performed high watermarks such as “Calf Rope,” “Supply and Demand” and “The Carpenter” fortify standards like “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train,” “Let Him Roll” and “Homegrown Tomatoes.”

October 11 Guy Clark concert cancelled
Raleigh, NC-We regret to report that Guy Clark has cancelled his appearance at Duke Performances in R.J. Reynolds Theater on Friday, October 11. Mr. Clark is ill and unable to perform; unfortunately, we will not be rescheduling his performance. In addition, we were not able to procure an appropriate replacement, so we are canceling the Friday, October 11 presentation altogether.

ALBUM REACHES HIGHEST FIRST WEEK SALES MARK IN MASTER SONGWRITER’S CELEBRATED CAREER
Nashville, TN – My Favorite Picture Of You (Dualtone Records), the first studio album in four years from legendary songwriter Guy Clark, receives unanimous praise from the press as it reaches chart and sales milestones in a career that spans four decades.
Upon its July 23rd release, My Favorite Picture Of You sold more in its first week (5593 units) than any album in Clark’s celebrated career. The album debuted at #62 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, #12 on the Country chart (both highest-ever debuts for Clark), #19 on the Indie Chart and #5 on the Folk Chart .

Guy Clark Returns With My Favorite Picture Of You His First Studio Album In Four Years On July 23
My Favorite Picture Of You, the first studio album in four years from legendary songwriter Guy Clark, is set for a July 23 release on Dualtone Records. As one of the most revered songwriters of his generation, Clark embodies the term “songwriter’s songwriter.” The simplicity of the recording shines brightly while capturing Clark’s beautifully understated and road worn vocals. Clark co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks on My Favorite Picture Of You and dug very deep for each performance on this truly inspired collection.
The album’s heartfelt title track was written for Susanna Clark, Guy’s wife of 40 years, and a successful songwriter in her own right, who passed away in 2012. If a picture says a thousand words, then the cover photo of My Favorite Picture Of You declares an entire life. The cover depicts Clark, slightly blurred in the background, holding up an old photo of his beloved from the 1970s. According to Clark, Susanna walked in and found he and friend, the late Townes Van Zandt drunk, again. She stormed out of the house, which is when the Polaroid was taken.
The song is a loving tribute that melts your heart while making you smile. As a master songwriter, Guy Clark has always made us smile by infusing his wry wit into thoughtful storytelling.
Clark’s vocals on My Favorite Picture Of You exude truth, wisdom and warmth, only touching on the insight he has gained from an extraordinary life. From the delicate sweetness of “Cornmeal Waltz” to the poignant story of the veteran returned a changed man in “Heroes” to the determined “Hell Bent On A Heartache,” Clark delivers a standout album in a four-decade career overflowing with high points.
In 2004, Guy Clark was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He received the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and in 2013, he received the Academy of Country Music’s Poet’s Award, along with Hank Williams. However, Clark’s multiple Grammy Award nominations and accolades merely hint at the immeasurable impact his songs and recordings have had. He has been a mentor to artists such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell and his songs have been covered by a multitude of artists, including Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, David Allen Coe, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Jimmy Buffet, Asleep At The Wheel and many others. After 40 years of songwriting, Guy Clark continues to be lauded and admired by his peers, critics and artists young and old from different genres...and he is not done yet.

This One's For Him: A Tribute To Guy Clark was lovingly produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Tamara Saviano (Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster)—who is also working with Clark on his definitive biography—and frequent Clark co-writer Shawn Camp ("Sis Draper," "Magnolia Wind").
The collection was released by Houston's Icehouse Music in December, 2011. It includes 30 tracks by 33 artists who are friends and colleagues of Clark or who have been influenced by his remarkable compositions. The collection was mixed and mastered by Fred Remmert. Core band members include Camp, Verlon Thompson, Jen Gunderman, Lloyd Maines, Glenn Fukunaga, Mike Bub, Larry Atamanuik, and Kenny Malone.
Part of the proceeds benefit the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.

This One's For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark was honored last night at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium with the coveted Album of the Year award during the annual Americana Honors & Awards. Clark performed "My Favorite Picture of You," accompanied by Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp. After Clark's performance, the award was presented by Rodney Crowell and Brandi Carlisle. Other nominees in the category included Steve Earle's We'll Never Get Out of This World Alive, Jason Isbell's Here We Rest and Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings The Harrow and the Harvest.

Live interview with Guy Clark to air Tuesday, December 13 on WSM-AM
The multi-faceted and award-winning group Mountain Heart will dedicate the December edition of their monthly radio program, That Just Happened, to the legendary singer/songwriter Guy Clark. Joining Mountain Heart's Jim VanCleve and Josh Shilling live in the WSM studios during the hour-long program, set to air at 3pm ET/2pm CT on Tuesday, December 13. Joining Guy will be the album's co-producers Tamara Saviano and frequent Clark co-writer, Shawn Camp, along with fellow songwriter and featured artist on the compilation, Verlon Thompson. Clark will be in the studio for the full hour to reflect upon his celebrated career, the 30-track tribute album and his thoughts on recently turning 70.
Guests on the show will share their experiences working on the newly-released album, This One's for Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark, as well as the impact that Clark has had in each of their own lives and careers. The heralded double CD includes recordings by Rodney Crowell, Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, Shawn Colvin, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris & John Prine, Patty Griffin, Ron Sexsmith, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen and many more. Houston's Icehouse Music will release This One's For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark on December 6, 2011 to celebrate Clark's 70th birthday. The collection was lovingly produced by GRAMMY-winning producer Tamara Saviano (Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster)--who is also working with Clark on his definitive biography--and frequent Clark co-writer Shawn Camp ("Sis Draper," "Magnolia Wind").
The tribute includes 30 tracks by 33 Americana artists who are friends and colleagues of Clark or who have been influenced by his remarkable compositions. The collection was mixed and mastered by Austin engineer Fred Remmert.
"Guy's songs are literature," says Lyle Lovett, among the venerable artists who eagerly gathered for This One's For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark. "The first time I heard Guy Clark, I thought it made everything I'd heard up to that point something other than a song. His ability to translate the emotional into the written word is extraordinary."
"Guy Clark is like a dancer with the way he talks and a photographer with the way he writes," noted Texas indie artist Terri Hendrix says. "He's the epitome of American songwriting."
For This One's For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark, artists brought two key instruments: a guitar and a profound reverence. Individual investments quickly emerged. Perhaps most notably, Gill claims a haunting bond. "Giant tears were falling all over my guitar as we were playing," the country star remembers about serving as guitarist on Clark's original "Randall Knife" recording nearly thirty years ago. "My dad was a lawyer, and he died when I was forty. Guy and I are tied at the hip through that song."
"Let's give her a good go and make ol' Guy proud of us..." said Rodney Crowell kicking off the collection on the first day as he readied to record "That Old Time Feeling." The double CD set was recorded live in studio with a core house band that included multi-instrumentalist Shawn Camp, guitarist Verlon Thompson and pianist Jen Gunderman. The tribute was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and Austin, Texas with a rotating cast of other musicians including multi-instrumentalist Lloyd Maines, bass players Glenn Fukunaga, Mike Bub and Glenn Worf, and drummers Kenny Malone and Larry Atamanuik.

GUY CLARK RELEASES SONGS AND STORIES, AUGUST 16 ON DUALTONE MUSIC GROUP
At the tail end of his performance of “L.A. Freeway,” master songwriter Guy Clark pauses to share a memory from that time decades ago, about a landlord and a grapefruit tree that might have added to the final push to say, “Adios to all this concrete. Gonna get me some dirt road back street.” It’s the kind of story you want to hear from a legend like Clark and on the live album Songs And Stories out August 16 on Music Group, not only are there the beloved songs, “The Randall Knife,” “The Cape,” “Homegrown Tomatoes,” and “Stuff That Works,” but also the essential asides and insights that can only be experienced from a seat in the audience.
The album was recorded at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Clark warmly surrounded by his musical family -- his longtime sidekick and co-writer Verlon Thompson, along with Shawn Camp, Bryn Davies and Kenny Malone. It’s a comfortable atmosphere that feels like a peek into a 3am guitar pull at The Driskill Hotel.
Before beginning the song “If I Needed You,” written by his longtime friend Townes Van Zandt, Clark shares the story about the surprising ease Townes had writing the popular song when living with Clark and his wife in Texas in 1972. “Townes came in for coffee one morning, picked up his guitar and laid this piece of paper on his leg and sang this song…and I said ‘where did that come from?’ and he said ‘I wrote it last night in my sleep, I just rolled over and wrote it down and turned over and went back to sleep.’” Clark laughs, adding, “Suspicion confirmed.”
Releasing just months prior to his 70th birthday, Songs and Stories further evidence why Clark is a member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame, with craftsmanship that young writers study and seasoned writers admire. Clark has continued to reap awards with a recent Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Association, and Grammy nominations for his last two studio albums with Dualtone, Somedays The Song Writes You and Workbench Songs.

Fans of the legendary singer-songwriter Guy Clark are in for a special treat later this summer with the release of a new album set to drop just months prior to his 70th birthday. Recorded live, Songs And Stories recounts an evening of music and insight from the renowned troubadour that spans Clark’s forty years of rough-and-tumble yet earnest storytelling. He has said that when he first heard the original version on Guy Clark's 2009 album, Somedays the Song Writes You, he knew it was just right for his new record.
"I was sitting in my truck and a friend had given me Guy's album, which had just come out -- and it's a song that talks about living life to its fullest, being a man about your responsibilities and not compromising. As soon as I heard it, I knew I had to cut it ... and call the album that ... because it says everything about the way you live your life, and what life can be if you refuse to buy into limits, which -- as someone who's read all his books -- is everything Hemingway's novels revolved around."
Clark's website describes the tune as a knowing sigh of a song, about the novelist's way of taking life in its most potent, undiluted form, regardless of where that takes you. That kind of sentiment may seem a long way from Chesney's 2008 beachy album, Lucky Old Sun. But Chesney has said he wanted this new album to be something more. "I came to town to write songs, to make records, to create something that spoke about how I lived, and the people who I knew who were just like me and my friends lived," he has said.
Clark is 68 years old and the country-folk-Americana songwriting legend has influenced plenty of artists like Steve Earle, Bobby Bare, Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris. Bob Dylan cites him as one of his favorite songwriters. And now you can add Chesney to that list. I can't wait to hear how far that side of Chesney has come since the basket full of chicken and the big cold jug of sweet tea.

Kozmic Blues: The Life and Music of Janis Joplin will take place in November
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Case Western Reserve University will celebrate Janis Joplin, one of rock and roll’s most passionate and influential artists during the 14th annual American Music Masters® series, entitled Kozmic Blues: The Life and Music of Janis Joplin, this November. The annual series of events will begin November 9, 2009, culminating with a conference and a tribute concert. The most star-studded and unique performance by a trio was Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke and Elvis Costello paying tribute to Sam Cooke in 2005. Last year, a 93-year-old Les Paul took the stage with his trio and then led an epic jam with some of rock and roll’s greatest guitarists, from Jennifer Batten to Slash.

Guy Clark's Craftsmanship Shows No Sign Of Withering
Songwriter, a legend to some, continues to write — and re-write

Guy Clark, master songwriter, suggests graph paper.
"It feels good to write like this," said Clark, sitting in a workshop filled with cassette tapes, pencils, acoustic guitars and other items that don't necessitate keypads, wireless signals or other modern totems. "It's just the tactile part of it, I guess. I write in longhand, on graph paper. It kind of keeps you in a straight line."
The "straight line" part may be argued: Neither Clark nor his late, great, wild-eyed songwriting buddy Townes Van Zandt did much in the way of sticking to the middle or avoiding guard rails. But at age 67, Clark is still putting pencil to paper, strumming guitars he crafts by hand and writing songs. Every time he does that, people listen and approve, and every little while someone such as Lyle Lovett calls him a hero of American song. Once, Michelle Shocked called him "God Clark." Every now and then, someone asks him to show them how it's done.
"I've taught some songwriting classes," he said. "My approach to that has always been to not list things you do or don't do . . . just write a song in front of them, and then everyone can see how it works. The question is, 'How do you write a song?' And so I say, 'Well, watch this.' "
He taught a class once at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Ranch up in Ohio, with longtime collaborator Verlon Thompson. The two friends wound up writing their "for example" song about a fellow who happens upon a pawn-shop guitar, tries it out and finds it was quite literally made for him. "The Guitar" is a bit of magical realism, set to an Americana soundscape.
"Verlon and I wrote it right in front of these nine guys that were in our class," Clark said. "The day we drove off, I put the lyrics in my bag and never looked at it again. I guess I was tired of it and put it away. Four years later, somebody from the class e-mailed Verlon a copy of the lyrics. We read it and it was like, '(Expletive), this is really good.' Verlon picked up a guitar, played a chord progression and started kind of talking the lyrics. And then, there it was. I may never do another of those classes. Not my cup of tea. But it did produce something really good."
'I like learning'
The son of a lawyer, Clark is more of a judge. He's an arbiter, capable of judging his own work and the works of others as good, bad or indifferent. As such, he's capable of taking a compliment: A visitor remarked that a particular guitar that Clark made is "magnificent," and Clark responded, "Yeah, it is." That's his favorite guitar, though, the 10th one he crafted. Call the ninth one "magnificent" and he might well take a drag from his hand-rolled cigarette and disagree.
His discerning eye doesn't look away even from things he's already recorded. He figures a couple of the lyrics from his new Somedays the Song Writes You album could use some work.
"Well, like Rodney Crowell called me and said, 'I've got a song I want you to help me finish,' " he said. "He had the first two verses, which were just pristine. I think the story is that Rodney was in Scotland and ran into some crusty merchant marine sailor and Rodney got enthralled with the life this guy had led.
"Rodney and I, we were trying to write about this sailor who gave up on the sea and walked inland. But I'm still a little confused by the song. I wish it were a little tidier, the transition of him giving up the sea and going inland to die. I just have some questions about it. So I'll keep working."
Clark's first batch of recorded songs came out on an album called Old No. 1, a 1975 release that remains an object of affection and envy among songwriters.
"That album was received really well, right from the start," Clark said. "I got this great review in Playboy, and Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger got kind of panned in that same issue."
Somedays the Song Writes You finds Clark collaborating with Thompson, Crowell and old friend Gary Nicholson, but also with young-buck tunesmiths Ashley Monroe, Patrick Davis and Jedd Hughes.
"See, I like learning stuff, and I learn a lot from people like that," Clark said of the latter three. "With the young writers, I pretty much have my way with the lyrics, the final say, but even then there are things that come out of their mouths that wouldn't have come out of my mind. I enjoy sitting at a table and wrangling with words. I find that inspiring, and I learn from these people."
Songwriter Stephen Allen Davis has written songs recorded by Tammy Wynette, Joe Cocker, Frank Sinatra and Kenny Rogers, but until a recent day at Clark's workshop, he had not asked an on-the-record interview question. Observing until the end of the question-and-answer session, Davis wanted to make at least one inquiry of Clark, and he asked the sage about his "first real guitar." Clark said it was a 1953 Martin D-18, and then he went and got that guitar out of a case in an adjoining room.
"I never thought it was that good of a guitar, and the neck is too thin," Clark said, handing the instrument to Davis, who remarked that it was one of the best-sounding guitars he'd ever played.
Then Clark began talking of another guitar, perhaps in order to make a point about the benefits of banging the guardrails.
"I played this D-18 for years, but I started dabbling in some others. I had a cousin who worked at Martin, and she could get guitars at cost, and I ordered a Martin D-28. She sent it to me, and it didn't sound good at all to me. One night, I left it in the back of a car, when it was 17 below in Nashville. The finish on the guitar shattered like safety glass. I took it out of the case, saw the damage, and strummed it, and it sounded like a million bucks all of a sudden.
"Oh, that loosened it right up," he continued. "I still play that thing sometimes. It's a great one. Not as good as that, though," Clark said, nodding to his own No. 10.
