“I know I’ve been thought of as a songwriter, but I’m a singer-songwriter and those are inextricably linked. I really don’t have any reason to write songs unless I go play ‘em and no reason to go play ‘em unless I write ‘em. They go hand in hand. Actually, to me, going out and playing is sort of the last step in the writing process. You don’t really know how it is until you try it out.”
